So you want to be a teacher? Well if we are being honest with each other, I really didn’t think I would ever want to be one! My mother and grandmother were both teachers, and I always swore I would never be one.
Teacher- (tee-cher) noun. One who inspires, guides, enlightens, and motivates; makes the world a better place.
I truly enjoyed grade school and absolutely loved my English classes. I might’ve put too much pressure on myself as a student, okay I know I did and still do!! I graduated high school in 2017 and thought I wanted to go into business. I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit about myself, but deep down I knew I was meant to be in the classroom. It took me a little time to come to terms with majoring in education. One major aspect of my resistance was hearing several teachers tell me, “Whatever you do, don’t go into education!” I was conflicted for a long time. It took a lot of self-reflecting on my dreams and aspirations and what would make me feel the most fulfilled. I know teaching is not a selfish career, but I do think it is a major decision that must also benefit you in some capacity. If you are not keen on the idea of dealing with parents, troubled kids, students with disabilities, lesson planning your life away, (kidding but not really), then teaching might not be for you. Teaching is not a “glamorous” profession. However, through teaching, you will be able to touch lives and make an impact. Positive or negative, it’s up to you.
